MSP RAISES SPEYSIDE GRITTING WITH THE COUNCIL FOR THE THIRD TIME

13/12/2017

Richard Lochhead has written again to the Moray Council regarding concerns about winter road maintenance in Glenlivet.

An increasing number of residents in Speyside have contacted the SNP MSP outlining their concerns and frustrations over the reduction in priority.  People in the area are deeply unhappy that the Conservative and Independent Councillors voted against debating a motion at full Council to reconsider the decision to downgrade the priority of the route.  Many have pointed to the impact the reduction has already had on the area due to snowfall over the last week.

Mr Lochhead has already written to the Moray Council twice urging them to review this decision given the strength of feeling in the community and the real possibility that this could prevent kids from getting to school.

Today, Moray’s MSP wrote again to Roddy Burns asking what options are available at this stage for the residents who want to see this decision overturned.

Commenting, Mr Lochhead said:

“With the winter weather we’ve had over the last week it seems the people in Glenlivet have really felt the impact of the reduction in road maintenance by the Moray Council.

“More and more people are getting in touch with me to express their fears over the safety implications of this decision, and it is absolutely clear that people are deeply unhappy that the Conservative led administration blocked a motion to review the downgrading of maintenance in the area.

“We’re all well aware of how severe the weather can be in Speyside and folk in the community are simply astounded that Council would reduce priority in the area worst affected by snow.

“The Council needs to recognise that residents’ fears are not going to go away and that they really need to reverse this decision or put in place a maintenance plan that addresses the concerns of those living and working in Glenlivet.”
