SNP COUNCILLORS WELCOME STEM TEACHER EDUCATION BURSARY SCHEME

11/03/2018

The Moray SNP Group of Councillors has warmly welcomed the announcement by Depute First Minister John Swinney today regarding the STEM teacher Education Bursary.  People that work in the Oil and Gas Sector will be offered a £20000 bursary to retrain in key technical subjects such as Engineering, Technology, Maths and Science.  Ex-employees of the oil industry could benefit greatly from this bursary.

In Moray Council this morning, Children and Young People’s Services Committee members were presented with reports that indicate the need to raise the aspirations in STEM subjects for young people in Moray Schools. Many of the future jobs our young people will undertake will be based in a high-tech, skilled economy. It is very important to have a strong base structure to their chosen career pathway.

SNP Education Spokesperson Cllr Sonya Warren said:

“As the local Councillor for the Buckie area, which has been particularly affected by the downturn in the oil and gas industry, I feel this offers a great opportunity for highly skilled workers to retrain and become teachers in these key subjects. These are people who have been at the very cutting edge of new technologies and the experience they will bring will be highly relevant to future employees in various sectors.

“I urge people in Moray to take a look at this offer and consider taking up this opportunity to change career and help inspire and educate our workers of the future.  The benefits of having teachers that have worked in industry will be fantastic for the young people in our communities.”
